Why owners here add one

  • Fewer leaves and pine needles in the skimmer
  • Fewer bugs at dusk in a long, humid summer
  • A self-closing screen door can be the gate the barrier law asks for
  • Some shade from the screen itself

When a cage counts as the barrier

Bay County's pool notice lists "reinforced screen pool enclosures" as one kind of wall that can form the barrier (Form B30). The same rules still apply: at least 48 in of height, small openings, and doors that swing out and close and latch by themselves. If the house wall is the fourth side, each door to the pool needs an alarm or a self-latching device mounted at 54 in.

Wind design

The 2023 Florida Building Code map for Bay County shows Risk Category II design wind speeds of 130 and 140 mph (Bay County). Screen enclosure frames are sized from the code's own screen-enclosure tables in Section 2002.4 (Florida Building Commission). In practice: ask for the signed engineering sheet, the frame and fastener sizes, and whether the enclosure is permitted separately.

After a storm

Torn screen is cheap; a bent frame is not. Ask up front who rescreens, how fast they can come after a named storm, and whether panels are designed to be cut or removed to spare the frame. Insurance treatment of cages varies by policy, so read yours.

What changes the price

  • Footprint and height (mansard or dome roofs cost more)
  • Picture-window panels and screen grade
  • Attaching to the house versus free-standing
  • Doors, kick plates and lighting
  • Coastal-zone engineering

Common questions

Does a screen enclosure count as the pool fence in Florida?

It can. Bay County's pool notice names a reinforced screen enclosure as one kind of wall that may serve as the barrier, provided it meets the code's height, opening and gate rules (Form B30). If a house wall forms one side, its doors and windows need alarms or self-latching hardware.

Will a screen cage survive a hurricane?

Bay County sits in the 130–140 mph design wind zone on the 2023 Florida Building Code map (county map), and enclosure frames have their own wind tables in that code. Ask for the engineering sheet with your quote, and ask who rescreens and checks the frame after a storm.
